When a fence needs engineering
The county decides, but the usual triggers are height above the standard limit, masonry or concrete block construction, solid privacy panels that catch more wind, a fence that doubles as a retaining wall, or a design that is not a standard manufacturer detail. Check with your permit office, or send us the address and a sketch and we will tell you.
What you receive
- Wind load calculation for your address and exposure
- Post size, spacing and footing depth and diameter
- Masonry reinforcement and connection details where they apply
- Signed and sealed drawings ready to upload with the permit application
How it works
Step 1: Send the address, a sketch or photos, and any plans or survey you have, or call us. Step 2: We confirm what the county needs and send a fixed written price. Step 3: Approve the quote and send the survey if one is required. Step 4: We prepare the calculations and drawings, review them and seal them. Step 5: You or your contractor submit the permit, and we answer the county's comments on our plans.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an engineer for every fence?
No. Standard fences built to the county's prescriptive details usually do not. Tall, masonry or non-standard fences often do.
Do you need a survey?
A survey helps show setbacks and where the fence sits. We tell you what your county asks for before you pay.
What if the county asks for changes?
We respond to the county's first round of comments on our plans as part of the fee. Additional rounds are quoted separately.
How much does fence engineering cost in Tampa Bay?
Our fixed price starts at $700. Your exact price depends on the size and complexity of the project and what your county requires, and you get it in writing before you pay. There is no hourly billing. Typical turnaround is 5–7 business days.
