Damaged or altered trusses
The Florida Building Code, Residential (Section R802.10.4) does not allow trusses to be cut, notched or altered without approval from a registered design professional. Contractors call us when a chord was replaced in the field, a truss was damaged in a storm, or the original truss drawings can't be found. We inspect the trusses, design the repair and issue a sealed repair detail your crew can build and the inspector can check.
Tile roofs and solar panels
Switching from shingles to concrete tile roughly triples the weight of the roof covering, and solar arrays add weight plus wind uplift at their attachments. We check the existing trusses and connections for the new loads and the current wind design requirements, and tell you whether the roof works as-is or what reinforcement is needed.
- Attic inspection of trusses, bracing, bearing and hurricane connections
- Load check for the new roof covering or solar array
- Sealed letter, or repair details and calculations when reinforcement is needed
Inspections tied to your permit
For re-roof and repair permits we can provide the engineer's letters inspectors ask for at dry-in, flashing and final, so the project keeps moving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a damaged truss be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes. Many truss repairs are done with engineered scabs, gussets or added members, designed for the specific damage.
What if the original truss drawings are missing?
We can still design a repair, but it is more conservative and takes more time. If you can find the truss manufacturer's tags or drawings, the work usually gets simpler.
Do you check roofs for solar installers?
Yes. We work with homeowners and solar installers to confirm the roof framing can carry the panels.
